Speaker 1: Hi folks. We made it three years. I'm David, he's This is Miguel. Most of you have interacted with one of us during this process. For us it's a great honor to have you here in our city. We uh hope to have a good conference. Um we are I I think we are most of us are a little bit uh unused to presential konferens nu. Så det ska bli en fresh start. Telkomme you to the to this behådliga sitt. Vi will have the visor.

0:46

Speaker 1: Filippo will say some uh will say some some words about the city

1:01

Speaker 2: Well good morning everyone. It's a big pleasure. I'm the only one wearing a suit as far as I could notice. So no well there is another person there. Okay, so Well, but uh it's very good to have you here. It's very good to have David and Miguel and many others organizing this, so congratulations. It's uh I know that's a big effort for everyone. So It's uh that's the the thing that I most like in the in the city is to see the the people that work in companies that make the city livable to have this to have this uh willing to organize these kind of things to get people from all over the world to know better our city but no better what we do and and and especially to to work together in a better world. Congratulations, it's a pleasure to be here.

1:48

Speaker 2: Uh for everyone that flew from uh Europe to Porto or for other countries because I know there are people from out outside Europe here also Welcome and uh to the the DjangoCon 2022. And uh Portu just a few words to explain where you are. Probably most of you know but uh it's al always something that we do as uh uh in these positions is uh is a European mid-sized city. Uh we have almost two hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants But for everyone that don't know our borders, we're only forty-two square kilometers. But I I I challenge you to to understand where are the borders because you won't notice them. So we usually we talk

2:34

Speaker 2: we are in a metropolitan area of 1. 8 million inhabitants. Around here there are many cities that together make 1. 8 million inhabitants. And you are also in the north part of Portugal. And in the north part of Portugal It's usually talked we talked about it as the important motor of our economy. It's most of the exports come out from here. We have a lot of industry from the shoe industry, from the garment, from the metal industry. uh from the textile many other industries that we have around here in the north part of of the country and uh as far I am sure you know also in uh technological uh change as fast as many as the changes that you are uh

3:23

Speaker 2: see in the world. So We are in a global economy and most of the things that we do here in the north part of the country are exporting to many other countries in the world. We have very important and uh very interesting indicators of the quality of life. So well resulting in uh uncommon safety levels human and welcoming characteristics. I hope you you get to know the city and to understand what I'm saying. And it's also a very multicultural and entrepreneurial city. So we have Usually we say it's our in our DNA this entrepreneurship and the way that we see things and we like to innovate. It's quite uh evident right now through the development of tourism.

4:10

Speaker 2: We have more and more people coming to Portuguese to understand what I'm saying. Um and uh uh of course uh It's also an historical uh city. We have more than two thousand years of history, a UNESCO heritage place also. Um and uh I think during these uh two thousand years what I usually say is that we have been developing a unique capacity of being a resilient city also. So we always try to find innovative solutions to cope with the challenges that we have in the city. And this capacity to address the challenges in different and innovative ways is for sure I think one of the keys of success uh that we have in the city. And uh together with university I I must say uh

4:56

Speaker 2: I I didn't uh um say hi to the the pro rected that is here also but it's very important to academia the all the knowledge that we have been developing So besides tradition and and culture we are also um like I said uh a very good higher education institution and research institutions. There is a lot of instit research uh going on uh on on the city and uh it's one of the reasons that we have so good quality in our resources in our human resources. But without that it would definitely be much more difficult to have all the invention, the creation, the development of new products that we see in many of the companies that we have in the in the city and the services that we have been creating a long time. So there are also like unicorns in the city and many other things, but I I advise you to to to to go and to try to to to find it.

5:49

Speaker 2: From the municipality perspective, I have some more time if they give me more time. Because I I'm I'm a tech guy. I don't uh uh Look like it but uh I'm a sick guy. Uh I I worked in the telecommunications for a long time and uh I'm a passion for Porto and uh my passion for Porto led to some politics and uh for the last ten years I've been uh working uh at the municipality with political responsibilities. And uh It's very important for us to create the conditions and the continuous improvements and we we usually seek to solve the present but also the future challenges. Usually we do this because we would like to receive more and more companies, we like to receive more talent, more culture

6:39

Speaker 2: differences, more investment of course, more research. And also more great events like DjangoCon. That's uh usually and uh uh we have been able to do that in the past years So the innovation ecosystem and the way we look to it we usually like to say that we want continuously to promote the innovate and innovative innovation ecosystem in the in the municipality And we have made the digital transition a huge priority also and technology of course play a role and it's been a great facilitator in many other things that we want to accomplish. Especially uh we need to have better decisions and to have better decisions we need to have good knowledge, good data

7:26

Speaker 2: and so we have to make also responsible use of big data and and the Citif uh strategy has been uh using uh or been based in uh interoperable urban platforms that in essence work as operating systems of the services provided by the city. And we are very fond of open standards of all the APIs and shared data models to achieve this interoperability. uh from data from systems from platforms uh among all the communities and suppliers that we that we have and also among all many other cities that have this also this understanding of the future and the truth is that the open source software is a main priority for us and it as it as it works as a guarantee of quality, as security, as

8:14

Speaker 2: transparency. uh and namely regarding critical systems uh as uh those we have i in the in the city. So we see Porto as a living lab, a place where companies, academia, citizens uh in general can test their products and services uh in a a thriving ecosystem of co-creation and experimentation um that uh are very common and increasingly adding value to to the things that we do. For effect We rely on the Porto Digital. Porto Digital is like a company, a municipal company that we have together with the university. And it's usually we say it's our toolbox for for the works for the municipality. It provides the tools for supporting all the development, the processes, the actions that we have to

8:59

Speaker 2: that we want in the open innovation co-creation that I was talking about. And to be consistent of this mindset of valuing the shared data, Porto Digital Of course has to most of this service is based on open source software. And just to give you some examples because we are in a tech and uh we uh uh for you to to have this piece of what we are doing. For example the urban platform that I was telling you about that operates uh in uh a fire or Orion. I don't know if uh here people work with Fireware but If you don't you you can take a look and uh where we store data, where we we share it with the community, so everything that from noise, from traffic, from air quality, from weather.

9:45

Speaker 2: Um so It's very important in order to share the data with our CT stakeholders, breaking the silos and avoiding vendor lock-ins. That's something that we usually take into consideration And of course all the security and many other things. Another thing that we do, for example, is Explore Portal. Explore Portal is supported also in two open source systems. Open Trip Planner and Palaeus and it's an innovative solution that uh it 's challenges the the visitors and the citizens to discover and explore the city. So it's It's more or less in all the places where we have public transport. And these two examples, just to finish. are um and many more could be uh mentioned but uh

10:30

Speaker 2: it's uh to highlight the importance um especially the importance to have you here uh in a in a clear opportunity to have Porto closer to the tech community that we have all over Europe and the world. And I hope that uh sooner than Porto uh sooner than later Porto can refer to Django as uh one of the solutions that we also use in our innovative city c services. So thank you very much. It's very important to have you all here. It makes all sense for us to have import Django and I hope you have a thriving today And if you have time, I think you will have uh have time to visit the city and to enjoy what we have to offer to you and come back.

11:18

Speaker 2: Thank you very much.

11:26

Speaker 1: Just to let you know, um Porto City was one of the first supporters of DjangoCon right from the start in 2019 when we started doing this this trip. We also had uh the the initial support from University of Porto and to tell us about a little bit about it we have uh Pedro Bandão uh pro rectorate of the university

11:53

Speaker 3: So hello, good morning to you all. So I also have a paper I hope it it won't be a as long as uh the one from the municipality. No, it's very good. So one of the things that I also try to emphasize here is is this the the the technicalities and all the the technology that has been uh growing in Porto and all the multinationals. I also mentioned it but just very briefly. So I'll I'll try to give a bit of an image what is the University of Porto. So I'm a professor, I'm more or less fresh on this job as a pro rector. So that's why I I came on on the the threat instead of so I don't know yet how to dress. Um so thank you uh first for the the organizer. I think this is uh uh uh a very interesting um

12:38

Speaker 3: um conference and you'll see that we have some connections also on the the part of university with it with Jangon itself. So it's a thank you also for being here at nine o'clock to listen to us uh for me and and and uh filippe okay i think that's uh will be one of the highlights of this session. So um this is the fourteenth uh edition of uh Django as I saw as I Saw it and it's happening the third time in Portal, right? So although the other two were not very in Portal like so more on virtual portal So I think it will be uh a very different and uh uh and I hope you can enjoy uh all of Porto. Uh so I guess Uh the time in front of a computer screen will be more or less the same I would guess, but it will be with some partners aside

13:24

Speaker 3: uh this time so the room is nearly full. So in terms of the the University of Porto, so we have uh several faculties. I'll tell you a bit uh uh about that uh um further ahead, but one of the things that we have is the UP Digital. So UP Digital is uh so digital is all the buzzword of course. So UP Digital is University of Porto Digital, which is a sort of of a service that the university has uh within itself. That deals with all the technicalities associated with tech infrastructure, uh servers, networks, the help desk, IT help desk for users, being students, professors, even power users, or even information managers that we have. On faculties and also under information systems. We also have a division for security, of course, for all of these aspects

14:11

Speaker 3: And it we have an innovation uh development uh unit. So this unit is um as the name implies develops innovative services uh but mainly also uh deals with uh system information or information systems that we have on university. So the basis was R all called DB database with PUL uh SQL uh on its basis uh is still being used in most of it. But we are now as part of some trying to separate the branch of what is the database and what is are the front ends. We are moving to uh frontends using Django. Right, so um in several parts of the systems. So we have now a cleaner separation on some of the the responsibilities in the information system and quicker development in terms of responsive

14:57

Speaker 3: interfaces in this case. So the the new university portal that you can browse and have a look, uh a communicational one because the information system for uh uh uh internal uh affairs will be uh separate one and one of the things they were doing is separating these two uh parts. So is uh built on Django. In this case we we um um used uh uh uh a prof a platform that we uh in-house then uh uh developed for uh for the for the users the end users. So the back end and the front end in terms of the site itself is uh based on on Django. So the example is to uh illustrate the connection that we have and the interest that we have for uh in the service of the university and we have also some on the courses of course of the university

15:44

Speaker 3: was more python not necessarily uh Django on all of the systems So um one thing that I mean I think that most of you are the first time in Porto, some of you, some of you are not, so I hope you will enjoy exploring the city architecture, culture, scientific, human heritages, nightlife, and the university itself. So we have several polls, uh the origins of the university. are from the eighteenth century. Okay , or only formally the it was established on the twenty second of March uh nineteen eleven. So uh uh a hundred more than a hundred years ago. Um our institution is a large is one of the largest universities in in Portugal now with more than three to thirty-two thousand

16:30

Speaker 3: students uh um and 14 faculties we uh covering of course all the main knowledges or areas of knowledge that we have so it we have as it was mentioned forty five forty eight sorry certified research units And most of them are also interface institutes with the industry itself. So and we are part or responsible for more than twenty percent of the Portuguese scientific production uh indexed in the web of science. We had uh 99 spin-offs created and 3037 patents written granted, uh 331 were international patents. So the university researchers have been very prolific in this connection with the industry, namely in entrepreneurship projects,

17:16

Speaker 3: with over a hundred be having been approved. So here the main point or selling point is that we are very entrepreneurship, either the university and also the municipality. So and it's sort of like uh uh having the carrot for you to to come uh um to come and be with us and either here or doing research or even with entrepreneurship within the university itself. So I hope beyond all the technical talks and non-tech enjoyment that you'll have in New Porto, you can also keep an eye for opportunities for this in terms of research, entrepreneurship, or both with the university and I think with a municipality. Okay, so I thought about ending this with a timeless cheering so you'll see my age regarding this. So timeless cheering

18:02

Speaker 3: up of Steve Ballmer for his developers, but I think it's best just to say happy coding and thank you for being listening. Okay?

18:18

Speaker 1: For those of you who will join us in the sprints, you will know some of the university opport because the sprints will happen in the campus area. Now Miguel will give you some details about the conference. I can start by a simple one. The gift bags will be distributed throughout the day. We decided not to give to give it in the beginning to speed up things. Any one of you also bought a t-shirt they will also be available at the registration desk desk. You can go there and grab them

19:05

Speaker 1: So um tomorrow we will have a a big party. Tomorrow we will be giving you the bands that you'll have to have to join the party. Okay, now Miguel can go on. So welcome again. I'll go

19:28

Speaker 4: with some practical uh information regarding the conference. So this is the first time that uh Gencon Europe is in Portugal It has been all over Europe as you can see from this map. And here is a quick a quick preview of the calendar. So we have talks and workshops and lighting talks every day. From the one Wednesday to Friday. During the weekend we'll have the sprints. Django Girls On Saturday, you can still sign up. I'll give more information later on. And then at the end of each day we'll have a boat cruise free of charge for all the participants. All you need to do is to sign up uh beforehand because the boats have limited capacity.

20:17

Speaker 4: And tomorrow as David was saying we have the the party So this is a quick map of the of the venue. We are in the auditorium and you have these maps all over the venue so you can check them out and so you don't get lost If you have any technical issue for those that watching uh online, you can ask for help at the support channel in Slack or by email. And for those that are here physically, you can just contact the yellow but they they look more orangey the t-shirts and uh I'm sure they they'll get you the solution for your issues Uh a quick recap on the code of conduct, so be kind, behave professionally and make this a welcoming event for all

21:05

Speaker 4: And uh if you have any issue, this is the list of uh team members that are in the code of conduct team and you can contact them directly at the conference. They will have uh Orange t-shirts and also they will be available in Slack. Again on Saturday we are at the Jung Girls Workshop free of charge as well. Just need to sign up beforehand This will be at the University of Porto, not uh in this main venue. For the lightning talks, if you are here physically, you can just Put the name, the title and your your own name at the whiteboard at the entrance. Uh you come in on the right side Or if you are watching uh virtually, you can send the recording by email to our email address.

21:54

Speaker 4: Just five minutes and that's it. It will be at the end of each day For the boat crews, it's sponsored by uh platformsage, colo and sentry. So they sponsored one boat ride each and it's supported by Django Social. And don't forget to sign up because if you go there without uh having signed up, they won't let you in. But it's important. And the party, it's also close by, it's within walking distance It will be tomorrow at 10 and uh we'll give the the bracelets uh tomorrow during the day at the registration desk Don't forget to grab a t-shirt. You can still buy one within Pratics

22:40

Speaker 4: and follow us on social media For the swag bags and for those that have already purchased the a ticket online, you can pick it up at the registration desk. We didn't do this during the morning because it was too many people So you just go there with your QR code for the t-shirt and you can pick it up. For those that don't have the t-shirt, you can still go there to get um the swag back. That's for for everyone.

23:07

Speaker 1: And uh we also like to thank all all of our sponsors. As you can see, there are many of them in different levels, uh some some support uh Others uh gave us uh plenty of support. We also have uh some some uh sponsors that uh helped us locally uh so We we'd like to thank all of them to allow us to have this working
