Hello. I'd like to welcome you all to my short presentation where I give you an overview of the Jungle Software Foundation, popularly known as the DSL. My name is Anna Makarunze. And before I start, I would like to thank DEFNA and all the volunteers for putting together this great conference. I'd also like to thank them for the support they've given the DSF over the years through organizing Django Call US SOS being one of the corporate sponsors of the DSF. I'd also like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to give a short overview of the DSF as we come to the end of another great year for the DSF. A little bit about myself. I'm a software engineer based in Harare, Zimbabwe, and the current president of the Django Software Foundation.

1:18

I'm also the fundraising coordinator and a trustee for the Jungle Girls Foundation. Just a brief overview of my talk. In my talk, I'll cover what the DSF is, DSF membership and the governance of the DSF I also talk about the Jungle Survey and the upcoming Malcolm Tritnik Awards nomination and the DSF board elections. So what is the DSF? The Django Software Foundation or DSF is the non-profit established to promote, support, and advance the Django Web Framework open source project. The foundation's goals are to support the development of Django by

2:04

sponsoring sprint meetups, gatherings, and community events. To promote the use of the of jungle among the worldwide web development community to protect the intellectual property and the framework's long-term viability and to advance the state of the art. In web development. So who are the GSF members? The GSF is three types of members. Just uh these are corporate members and these uh organizations that support the development of jungle by contributing financially and taking part in member discussions. They become corporate members by applying for membership through the form available on the jungleproject. com website and get approved by the DSF board.

2:52

If you are a company or agency that uses Django, consider supporting the DSF by applying to be a corporate member. The second type of members are individual members. And as the name suggests, these are individuals who support Shango by taking part in member discussions pertaining to jungle and taking part in DSF board and taking out board elections. They become individual members by being nominated or self-nominating Through uh the form available on the website in get approved by the JSF board or Are seconded by existing GSF members. Individual membership is awarded to individuals who have made both code and or non -code

3:37

contributions. To the development or advancement of Django. If you know someone, including yourself, who has contributed to the development or advancement of Django, nominate them to become a DSF member and the DSF board will consider them Last but not least are Django Core members. And the title Django Core Member is a title awarded to people who have made tremendous contributions to the development of Jungle. The next thing that I would like to talk about is uh the governance of the DSF. So the DSF is governed by volunteers who fall under these terms. First the JSF Board, then the Code of Conduct Committee, the Technical Board, and the various technical teams.

4:25

The Jazer Board is made up of elected individuals who are elected each year and is responsible for the legal and fundraising aspects of the foundation. The DSF board meets once a month to discuss fundraising activities, GSF funds and expenses, grant requests for events, jug or trademark issues. Django Con licenses and oversee Django Con events organization, changes to DSF committees, DSF board and technical elections, and DSF partnerships Next is the Code of Conduct Committee. And the Code of Conduct Committee is made up by a group of volunteers who are committed to keeping the environment of the jungle community space

5:11

a safe. And welcoming one by handing code of conduct reports. The code of conduct committee also advises the board on code of conduct And or related issues. Membership is voluntary and anyone is interested in joining the Code of Conduct team can reach out to them via the email address, which is available on the website. On the technical side of things, we have the technical board, uh, which is made up of elected individuals. They are in charge of managing the Django Web Framework with this process and making the final technical decisions for the Django Web Framework. Direction. Election to the technical board is subject to meeting the prerequisite qualifications, which include being an active participant and contributor to Django technically

6:05

in The 18 months prior to the elections, technical both elections are held each time there's a major release of Django. Next, uh we have technical teams. We have technical teams work together with the technical board to support the development of Django. Joining all these teams is by invitation or through a call out on the Django developers mailing list, as they require knowledge of Django internals. We also have our jungle fellows and these are paid community managers who help us in the day-to-day triaging and matching of pull requests from contributors.

6:54

So uh we have some important highlights uh that I would need to share with you as the year comes to a close And uh I thought I'd share some of these areas that have taken place in 2021 or are to take place in 2021 before the year ends. And first is the jungle survey. This year we ran the jungle survey in partnership with our uh partners at Jet Brains in PyCharm. We decided as the board to conduct the survey together with JetPoint after seeing how well they've been running the Python survey together with the PSF. The survey ran from the 1st of August to the 4th of September 2021. And at the time of preparing this talk, the results aren't out yet.

7:41

Stay tuned for the results of the survey. This year We would not translate the questions into other languages due to time constraints. However, we hope next year we'll have enough time to translate the survey and make it easier for non-native English speakers to respond. The next item that I would want to highlight is, as usual, at the end of each year, particularly in November, we have a call out for nominations for the Morgan Training Awards. The DSF Made an annual award in honor of early junk contributor Malcolm Trednik called the Malcolm Tradnik Memorial Prize. which is a monetary prize awarded to the person

8:28

who best exemplifies the spirit of Malcolm Swake Someone who welcomes, supports and nature's newcomers, freely gives feedback and assistance to others and helps to grow the community. Announcement for call of nominations are announced are made through the DSF membership mailing list and through a blog post in November each year This year we will be sticking to the usual timelines as shown in the slides. If you know someone who deserves to be awarded the Malcolm Training Award, be sure to nominate them. If they are not selected this year, keep nominating them until they win. The winner will be announced after the December board meeting.

9:18

Then we also have the 2022 JSF Court elections. The GSF board members are elected for one-year term each year in November. And sticking to the usual timelines, we'll be announcing the GSF Board Elections for 2022 GSF Board of Directors in November through the DSF members mailing list and a blog post on our website. You can nominate yourself for an officer position, namely President, Vice President, Treasurer, or Secretary. Or not when you submit your application. The decision for you to get that officer position will lie entirely with the newly elected board. Anyone can run for the DSF board elections, even if you are not a DSF member.

10:08

No qualifications are required, so stay tuned for the announcement and sub V2 application. As usual, we hope to have the process done by the first week of December to enable the current board to coordinate the end of a takeover meeting with the new board members before the holiday season begins. So the new board member will be able to the new board will be able to take over at the start of the year with no glitches If you have any questions, please reach out to us and for foundation fundraising and vehicle issues.
